What Skills & Experience Do I Need?
There are many paths to becoming a Finance Controller:
- Fully Qualified in ACCA or CIMA
- University degree in accounting or other finance discipline
- While some employers are happy to consider qualified by experience candidates (QBE), extensive work experience within an accounting role of 5 years + would be required
However, formal qualifications aren't the only requirements. You will also need to demonstrate:
- Excellent computer skills including Advanced Excel / MS office
- The ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritise
- The ability to communicate with different employees to explain financial risks
- A proactive, self-starter
- Management and leadership experience
- Analytical skills to analyse data effectively to make decisions
- Leadership skills to motivate team members

The average salary for a Finance Controller is £55,000, although this figure can fluctuate depending on location and experience. As you gain more experience and become more qualified, you will find that your overall salary can increase to over £80,000.
