We baked our way to victory on Thursday 14th June, for Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day, raising a grand total of £165 for our Charity of the Year. With an in-house company bake off, a cake competition judged by none other than the MD of Tiptree Patisserie and an all-you-can-eat cake buffet, it was a sugary celebration to remember!
Cake with a cause
Did you know that in the average time it takes to bake a batch of cupcakes, six people in the UK will develop dementia? Now the leading cause of death, ahead of both cancer and heart disease, this is a cause that is very close to our hearts. 10 years ago, our co-founder and dear friend Margaret Locke was diagnosed with the condition. In support of Margaret and sufferers of Alzheimer’s everywhere, last year we pledged to raise an ambitious £10k for the charity. In December, we kicked things off with our first event – Elf Day. This June, Alzheimer’s Society’s national “Cupcake Day” provided the ideal opportunity to keep the ball rolling.
Ready, steady … cook!
The events kicked off at 9.30am on Friday morning when the stage was set with all the delicious delicacies our fabulous team had put together for our in-house company Bake Off! With a mouth-watering spread of carefully crafted goodies, it was a very sweet start to the day. Employees across the whole company entered their individual cakes, which were laid out on beautiful display for all to enjoy – for just £5 to eat as much as you can!
An expert judging panel…
True to form, we were absolutely delighted to have none other than local confectionary connoisseur and Managing Director of our longstanding partner Tiptree Patisserie Daren McGrath to judge the entries! McGrath worked alongside our in-house charity committee Rebecca Clarke and Holly Warren, as well as our keen cake enthusiast and newest member of the Technical & Engineering team Mark Everitt.
1st prize went to our amazing receptionist Michelle for her delectable cocktail cupcakes. Michelle won a stylish apron and cookery book. 2nd prize went to Credit Controller Louise who made little lemon cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes and chocolate and salted caramel, for which she won a bottle of pink gin and some luxury chocolates.
And last but not least, third prize went to our Health and Social Care consultant Hayley Phypers for her amazing blue monster cakes. For this, Phypers was the lucky winner of some delicious prize chocolates.
Finally, McGrath generously donated a bespoke Tiptree Patisserie hamper, which he awarded to Luke Langton – his personal favorite for his delicious Eton Mess cakes. We only just about managed to stop McGrath from sneaking the recipe back to the Patisserie kitchens!
The Prime team decides!
To keep things interesting, we also made sure to get every single member of our team’s “feed” back on our nibbles, with everyone voting on their favorite treat throughout the day. It was a tough decision for everyone who voted, with lemon, chocolate, blueberry, brownie and many, many more varieties to choose from! But the votes were in and at 4pm we were ready to celebrate the company Star Baker and runner up… culinary Queen of Commercial & Office … Kirsty Wilson, with her delicious Oreo Delights! Kirsty’s gorgeous treats were just as innovative, imaginative and sweet as her consultancy style and our team just could not get enough!
The race isn’t over yet…
All in all, our second fundraising event as official partners with Alzheimer’s Society was an amazing success. Everyone got involved, whether it was through baking or donating. But this isn’t the end of our fundraising journey. We’re only halfway through the year and still have plenty of energy in the tank to raise the roof on our fundraising target. Alzheimer’s Society need all the help they can get if they are to turn things around. With only one dementia researcher for every four cancer researchers, there is much progress left to be made. Help us get to where we want to be and max out our target!
