If you’re still getting used to industrial work, it could be an idea to get some basic experience in a factory or warehouse before diving into the world of assembly.
The skill you need to be an assembler will stand you in good stead to develop a rewarding career. Moreover, it’s a great way to find out whether or not you’re suited to work that leans more towards the technical and engineering sector, working within a team to develop production targets.
So, what skills do you really need to be a good assembler? In our 28 years in business as a recruitment agency, our expert industrial team have picked up one or two tips! We spoke to them to find out just what it takes to succeed in this area…
Attention to detail
As an assembler, you have a lot of responsibility. The clients’ products are literally in your hands! There will be safety regulations and quality standards that have to be adhered to. As such, it’s useful if you have very good manual dexterity. You will need to be able to follow drawings and detailed instructions down to the very last nuts and bolts.
Be good with your hands
When something needs fixing at home are you first on the job or do you get the handyman in? If you’re looking to become an assembler then you’ll have to have good mechanical skills! Many products will require you to be confident with hand tools and have a steady grasp. If you love getting stuck in with hands-on projects then this is the role for you!
Have high standards
Once you’ve finished assembling your products, the next step will be to inspect them. It will be up to you to make certain that what you’ve manufactured meets the required standards. In many temporary to permanent jobs, whether or not you’re offered a permanent role will be dependent on how well you manage this part of the process. At the end of the day, the business owner has a product to make and customers will expect that to meet certain standards.
Concentration
When you’ve got a task at hand, do you find it easy to stay on track or do you often end up daydreaming on cloud nine? For this type of work, it’s essential that you can pay attention for longer periods, as often your tasks may be a little repetitive. Of course, there will be regular breaks for you to recharge your batteries. But the pace of a production facility is usually quite fast and you will need to be able to stay focused, now matter what!
Teamwork
Down on the production line, everyone has to work as part of a team to get the job done. Now, you’re not going to be expected to do anyone else’s job for them, but if you see someone struggling, why not offer to help? It might also be a good idea to try to get to know your colleagues a bit. Keeping things friendly ensures you enjoy your job and the time flies by.
Self-motivation
One of the best things about being an assembler is that you will more than likely get to take charge of your own workload! You’ll be trusted to crack on with the tasks at hand and expected to do a good job under your own steam. However, the flip side of this is that you’ll have to be a pro at motivating yourself. Keep an eye on your pace of working, to make sure you stay on track. And don’t forget to cheer yourself on! You can do it!
