Virtual interviews and how to ace them

What is a virtual interview?

A virtual interview is an interview that is taken remotely using; Skype, Zoom, Whatsapp or other video platforms and sometimes over the phone, but usually via video where the interviewee and the interviewer are communicating using a digital platform rather than using a traditional method. Due to Covid-19 and the restrictions put in place by the government to work from home and to keep socially distanced, virtual interviews are taking place more and more.

If you're looking for a new role at this time then you will more than likely be invited to a virtual interview. Here are a few considerations to ensue your interview is a success...


Set up your interview station

If you've had the green light and an interview is going to take place, take time to consider where you can have your computer set up. Ideally somewhere with a calm uncluttered background where you are the main focus. You'll want to make sure theirs no distractions, a nice calm and quiet environment.

Test your technology

Once you've found the perfect place to have your virtual interview, you'll need to make sure you have all the applications downloaded and installed in advance. You will also need a web-cam if your laptop or other device hasn't got one installed and ensure your microphone is working. Test setting up a few days before the interview and at least 30 minutes before your actual interview on the day.

Finally internet connection, make sure wherever you're set up for your interview that you have a good connection, you don't want to get cut-off half way through or sound like a robot!

Look the part

"Dress and act like you're at a face-to-face interview" comments Senior consultant; Julia Sherlock. Just because your interview is taking place at home, it doesn't mean its acceptable to wear pyjamas! It's really important that you act and behave the same way you would at a normal interview and that includes clothing.

Be prepared

Preparation is key, if you prepare and practice you're more likely to feel positive and confident ensuring a more natural and authentic interview. If you have made notes make sure you have practiced them, so you have a more natural conversation, clicking around the screen will not go unnoticed...

It's a new world for everyone - Be yourself

You may find that you and the interviewer are faced with a new experience and are both remotely interviewing. Take comfort in the fact that this is all new for everyone involved. Feel empowered and relaxed as you're in your own safe space, this is an opportunity to showcase your personality as well as your knowledge and expertise.

Follow up

Finally follow up, it is good practice to follow up an interview, usually after around 24 hours. Set yourself a reminder to send an email, you could use this to thank the interviewer for their time and mention that you're here if they need to ask any further questions.
