Whether it's accounts, customer service, purchasing, HR, or production admin — office and support staff in manufacturing environments face pressures that simply don't exist in a corporate office setting. Hiring them without understanding that world…
You may have seen our Operations Manager, Katie, on ITV recently, talking about the challenges over 50s face getting back into work. It's a valid concern — many people in this age group find it harder to secure a role, even with years of experience behind them.
At Prime Appointments, we see things a little differently. In our world of manufacturing and engineering, over 50s often bring the kind of practical skills and technical understanding that are becoming rare. These are trades and skills built up over years — problem-solving, working safely, maintaining machinery, training others — all of which employers still need but struggle to find.
And the numbers back that up. Across the UK, 76% of engineering employers say they're finding it difficult to recruit for key roles (The Institution of Engineering and Technology), while 42% of manufacturing vacancies are classed as "skills-shortage" positions (FE News). At the same time, fewer young people are entering these industries, meaning the experience and knowledge of older workers are more valuable than ever.
The wider job market is tough for everyone right now. The national unemployment rate sits around 4.8%, (Office of National Statistics), which shows that opportunities are tighter across all age groups. But for those over 50, there's an extra challenge — the perception that their skills might be out of date. In our experience, that couldn't be further from the truth.
From what we see every day, the biggest hurdle for many over 50s isn't skill — it's confidence. Technology and job titles may have changed, but the core abilities, reliability and strong work ethic haven't. Employers consistently tell us they value people who know how to get things done and take pride in their work.
We also know that many employers want to build balanced teams. Hiring experienced people brings stability, mentorship and technical know-how that younger team members can learn from. It's a win for everyone.
If you're over 50 and looking for a new role, we want you to know there's real demand for what you bring. Whether you're after temporary or permanent work, your experience matters — and we're here to help you put it to good use.
Let's have that conversation.
